Tactile guidance systems for the blind made of plastic, aluminium, stainless steel and concrete as supplies for the blind
A tactile guidance system is generally defined as a system of tactile paving strips that enables blind and severely visually impaired people to move more safely and easily in public spaces, buildings, and public transport stops using a white cane. These systems are available in various designs and materials, such as concrete, aluminum, stainless steel, bronze, brass, or plastic . Some are available as adhesive strips or for retrofitting in indoor or outdoor public spaces , or are already integrated into precast concrete slabs . Clear tactile and visual information, combined with high-quality and durable materials "Made in Germany" or compliant with DIN 32984 ("Tactile paving indicators in public spaces"), provides safety and orientation for visually impaired people.
For visually impaired individuals with limited vision, particular attention must be paid to ensuring sufficient contrast between the tactile guidance system and the background (see the DBSV website for contrast determination using a contrast chart or luminance). This is an important aspect when choosing the colors for the guidance system.
Here you will find illustrative examples and information from the German Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired on the application of DIN 32984 tactile paving indicators in public transport areas, available for download.
