FiberWatch – fiber optic perimeter protection for critical infrastructure
FaserWacht is a fiber optic system for the continuous monitoring of property boundaries, fences, and security-critical outdoor areas. The fiber optic cable is laid directly along the fence, barrier, or invisibly underground and acts as a sensor along its entire length. Mechanical impacts and characteristic vibrations can thus be detected, analyzed, and spatially localized.
The system also serves as vandalism/sabotage protection and is particularly suitable for substations, switchgear, power plants, battery storage facilities, data centers, industrial plants, military installations, and other critical infrastructure . Typical events include the movement of people, vehicles, climbing or tampering with the fence, as well as activities near an underground sensor fiber. This allows excavation, drilling, and other ground activities to be detected and spatially located. Perimeter protection can thus be extended to include intrusion attempts below fences or barriers.

Continuous monitoring via fiber optic cable without dead zones
Distributed acoustic measurement via fiber optics doesn't just rely on individual sensor points. Instead, the entire fiber optic cable can be used as a continuous sensor. Events are evaluated in real time along the monitored path and, depending on the system configuration, can be localized to within approximately one meter . Response times of less than two seconds are possible between a detected event and the alarm notification.
Adjustable thresholds and event classification allow relevant events to be distinguished from normal environmental activity. This means, for example, that not every vehicle or person movement automatically triggers an alarm.
Up to 100 km monitoring range
Depending on the configuration, a single system can cover monitoring distances of up to 100 km . This makes the technology suitable not only for compact industrial sites but also for extensive industrial areas, infrastructure corridors, and long property boundaries. The measurement technology used is designed for continuous operation; the system hardware has a mean time between failures of up to 25 years .
Combination with video surveillance for complete perimeter monitoring
FiberWatch can be combined with video cameras, thermal imaging cameras, drones, and existing alarm and control center systems to ensure complete perimeter security . When the fiber optic cable detects an event, its location is transmitted. This allows cameras or security personnel to respond precisely to the affected area.
