Soundproofing heat pumps
Soundproofing heat pumps
Soundproofing for heat pumps: A custom-made, individually adapted enclosure can significantly reduce the noise of heat pumps , thus ensuring greater peace and quiet for your neighbors. If you are planning to install a heat pump, you should therefore consider using an enclosure. Self-assembly is possible with assembly instructions.

Soundproof enclosures / sound-insulating housings for heat pumps
The noise level of heat pumps can reach up to 60 decibels.
While heat pumps impress with their energy efficiency and CO2 emissions , neighbors are increasingly complaining about noise. The culprit is the outdoor unit. It draws in ambient air and generates noise in the process. Depending on the model, this can become a significant source of stress, especially in densely populated residential areas.
According to the manufacturer, the noise level is between 40 and 60 decibels. For reference: 40 decibels is comparable to a quiet residential street at night, 60 decibels is the sound of heavy rain (Source: ZDF: Noise pollution - When the heat pump stresses the neighbors )
A well-designed enclosure/soundproof housing for outdoor heat pumps can not only reduce noise for your neighbors and yourself , but also extend the lifespan of your heat pump and lower operating costs. Because our enclosures are designed to reduce internal noise emissions, a sophisticated separation of supply and exhaust air must be taken into account.
In many homes and commercial buildings, heat pump heating systems are used as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional heating. One challenge when installing heat pumps is noise insulation. Especially with heat pumps installed outdoors, the operating noise can be disruptive, particularly in densely populated residential areas. An effective solution to this problem is enclosures that dampen the sound and thus ensure greater peace and quiet.
An enclosure is a cover or insulation specifically designed for outdoor heat pumps . It consists of sound-insulating materials and is engineered to absorb and reflect sound waves. This soundproof housing reduces noise levels , minimizing disturbance to residents and neighbors. Furthermore, when used as an outdoor unit, the enclosure protects the heat pump from the elements, thus extending its lifespan.
A well-designed enclosure should reduce noise while also ensuring adequate ventilation for the heat pump. Insufficient ventilation can impair the heat pump's efficiency, leading to higher operating costs. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure sufficient airflow during the installation of the enclosure.
Furthermore, soundproof covers can also serve as theft protection for heat pumps . " Police warn of heat pump theft " (Source: MDR)
We offer soundproof enclosures for industrial buildings, houses, and terraced houses . We recommend first checking whether our standard soundproof enclosures for heat pumps might be suitable, as these are significantly more cost-effective than custom-made enclosures.
We need the following information from you to prepare a quote:
- Photos of the (planned) location of the heat pump from all sides (exhaust air, supply air, access panels, etc.). The photos should be taken both up close and from a distance, showing the surrounding area.
- Manufacturer and type/model of the heat pump (please attach data sheets from the manufacturer)
- Dimensions of the device, dimensions of the air inlet area on the device for cross-sectional calculation and diameter of the exhaust fan.
- Information about the distance to surrounding buildings or walls.
- Who needs protection? You, your neighbor? Information (distance, direction, and height) about the area to be protected.
- Information or specifications regarding initial sound emission values (device data sheets/mobile phone measurements, as reality differs) and target specifications (e.g. industrial area, residential area, spa town or information in dB about desired noise reduction)
- Information about building regulations on property boundaries, etc.
- Planned or actual operating times of the heat pumps
- Name and address of the installation location for the assignment of the ongoing process (if not already done in the request)
There are various mobile apps for "sound measurement" (also called "sound meter" in English) available for download in the Apple Store for iPhones and the Play Store for Android phones. Here is a general guide on the topic of noise and heat pumps: " Noise from the neighbor's garden: When the heat pump next door causes problems."
The soundproof enclosures can also be used for other pumps, such as condensate pumps . Custom-designed soundproof booths with drain and ventilation openings, as well as doors (with seals), are also possible.
Upon request, we can also supply larger quantities of customized soundproof enclosures for OEMs.
