Instructions for warehouse labels and shelf signs

Where are warehouse markings used?

Warehouse labeling ensures the orderly storage of goods, materials, and items in designated storage locations within the warehouse. It applies not only to products and components but also to storage areas, aisles, shelves, material handling equipment, and packaging/shipping stations. A well-organized warehouse system reduces unnecessary search times and significantly increases warehouse productivity.

Which materials are best suited for warehouse labeling?

The standard material for warehouse markings is plastic (PVC film and, for particularly robust solutions, polycarbonate). Magnetic or reflective film is available as a special option. Metal/steel can also be used for floor markings subject to heavy wear.

Block bearing, aisle or bearing shields are made of plastic or aluminum composite material.

Paper is only suitable to a limited extent due to its lack of durability.

How are warehouse labels created?

Warehouse labels, signs, and parking space markers can be individually printed. In principle, these can be designed freely according to individual requirements (e.g., with barcodes, pictograms, numbering, or RAL colors).

Here you will find detailed instructions on how the data should be structured in Excel for shelf and warehouse labeling .

Labels can, in principle, be freely designed in terms of content and design (e.g., with barcodes, arrows, colors, numbering, and text). Here are some examples of what is possible:

How do you design warehouse labels to make them easily readable?

Well-designed warehouse labeling is essential for maintaining an overview of the warehouse and ensuring that goods can be found quickly and reliably. Here are some tips on how to create easily readable warehouse labels:

  1. Use the largest possible sign size and a large, clear font. This will make the markings easily readable from a distance (e.g., from a forklift or from the ground in the case of suspended warehouse signs). Keep in mind that some employees may have poor or limited vision.

  2. Use different, high-contrast colors to visually distinguish different areas or (palette) levels. (" However, red-green color blindness is the more common color vision deficiency. It affects about 9% of all men and less than 1% of women. ")

  3. The descriptions/texts should be clear, precise, and easily distinguishable.

  4. Use pictograms, prohibition signs, warning signs, mandatory signs, rescue signs, fire safety signs ( safety signs according to ISO 7010 ) and, if necessary, images. ("One in seven adults in Germany is functionally illiterate.")

  5. Add arrows to indicate where the goods are located (e.g., top or bottom).

  6. Signs can optionally be equipped with reflectors so that they can be scanned from a distance.

  7. Make the block storage signs angleable so they can be read from below or the side.

  8. The shelves should be numbered from the start. This makes it easier to add shelves as your household grows.

  9. In order for the system to read the locations correctly alphanumerically, it is advisable to use a zero for all numbers below ten (e.g. 01, 02, 03, 04).

  10. A lack of consistent labeling is an easy way to confuse your system and your employees.

It is important to take sufficient time to carefully design and test the labels to ensure they are legible and understandable. Samples and proofs can help with optimal design. Test the warehouse labels beforehand with your scanners and also check their durability.

A well-thought-out warehouse labeling system can help optimize the warehouse process and save time and costs.

What types of warehouse markings are there?

How are warehouse labels removed?

Removing warehouse labels is generally labor-intensive. Special label removers are available. An alternative to the tedious and time-consuming removal of shelf labels is the use of opaque cover labels.
