Multilevel labels

The choice between self-adhesive and magnetic multilevel labels depends on your preferences and requirements. Self-adhesive labels stay securely in place without you having to worry about shifting or peeling off.

Uniqueness : Each storage location has a unique code.

Systematic structure : The code should reflect the warehouse hierarchy (e.g. hall/area → aisle → shelf → level → position).

Scalability : The system must support future capacity expansions without fundamental changes.

Machine readability : Supplement the labeling with barcodes or QR codes.

User-friendliness : Easy understanding and quick orientation for employees.

2. Structure of the shelf code

An optimal shelf coding system is based on a hierarchy and includes the following elements:
[Area or hall / aisle] - [Shelf] - [Level] - [Position or compartment]

Example :

A03-R05-E02-P10

A03 : Area / Hall A, 3rd aisle

R05 : Shelf 5

E02 : 2nd shelf level

P10 : 10th position on the plane

3. Recommended coding strategy

a) Area and passage identification

Each area, hall, and corridor receives an alphanumeric designation:

Letters (A, B, C...) for storage areas.

Numbers (01, 02, 03...) for gears.

b) Shelf numbering

Each shelf within an aisle is numbered consecutively:

For example, R01 for the first shelf, R02 for the second.

c) Level numbering

The shelf levels are numbered from bottom to top:

E01 for the lowest level, E02 for the one above it.

d) Position within the plane

The positions on a level are numbered from left to right:

ZB P01 for the first position, P02 for the second.

Additional options :

Zone marking (e.g. for hazardous materials or temperature-sensitive goods).

Article group identifier for specific product categories.

4. Color and layout optimization

Colors for areas or product groups :

Blue: Raw materials

Green: Finished goods

Yellow: Returns

Red: Blocking camp

Alternatively, each layer can be assigned a different color (e.g., from darker to lighter shade). Red-green color blindness must be taken into account when choosing colors!

Availability: RAL colors are an industry standard and easy to implement in labels or coatings.
Contrast: The selected RAL colors offer good contrast between the levels.
Adaptation to lighting and color effect in the warehouse: Colors with a high reflectance value for the upper levels improve visibility at high altitudes.
Accessibility: The colors are easily distinguishable for people with red-green color blindness.

Symbols instead of color: Use symbols and signs primarily over colors to describe content or objects.

Brightness contrast instead of color contrast: Use color combinations that differ sufficiently in brightness.

High-contrast labels (e.g., black text on a white or yellow background).

5. Integration of barcodes/QR codes

Supplement each code with machine-readable barcodes or QR codes.

6. Size

The size of multilevel labels is generally based on the height of the pallet rack beams. Here are some possible standard sizes:
