How to install self-adhesive floor markings?

Step 1: Preparation for Self-Adhesive Floor Markings

  1. Remove all old tape adhesive and chipped paint: Thoroughly clean the floor surface by removing any remnants of old tape adhesive or chipped paint. Ensure a smooth and clean base for the new floor markings. You can use adhesive remover if neccesary. If the floor surface has stubborn adhesive or coatings, you may need to use methods like sand blasting to ensure a clean and smooth base for the floor markings.

  2. Clean floor surfaces using an appropriate cleaner: Use a cleaner that does not contain chlorine or citrus cleaners. Chlorine can leave a haze on the floor, hindering effective adhesive bonding. Citrus cleaners can leave oily residues that compromise adhesion.

  3. Remove degreaser residue: If you have used a degreaser on the floor, make sure to remove or wash off any residue before applying the self-adhesive floor markings.

  4. Allow floor surfaces to dry completely: After cleaning, ensure that the floor is completely dry. Wait at least 30 minutes to ensure optimal dryness before proceeding to the next step.

  5. Apply floor markings: Once the floor is properly dried, start applying the self-adhesive floor markings in the desired locations. See the following Step 2.

Step 2: Applying the Floor Markings

Note: To maximize the lifespan of the floor markings, avoid applying them on floor surfaces with cracks or holes. In high traffic zones where scraping or dragging may occur, consider using alternative methods such as segmented floor markings for easy removal, aluminium or steel floor markings or liquid 2K floor markings with an extra protective layer.

  1. Remove protective backing: Peel off a few centimeters of the protective backing from one end of the floor marking.

  2. Place and press firmly: Position the adhesive backing on the floor in the desired location and firmly press it down.

  3. Peel the protective backing: While pressing down on the floor marking with one hand, use the other hand to peel off the remaining protective backing.

As an alternative to step 1 to 3 you can use a professional automatic dispenser for floor marking rolls.

  4. Cut the floor marking to end a line: To end a line, simply cut the floor marking with scissors or a utility knife.

  5. Enhance bonding with weight: To increase the bond between the floor marking and the floor, you may apply pressure, such as using a roller or walking over the entire line.

Step 3: Maintenance for Self-Adhesive Floor Markings

Maintaining your self-adhesive floor markings is crucial to ensure their longevity and effectiveness. Follow these maintenance guidelines to keep your floor markings in optimal condition:

  1. Regular inspections (as part of your 5s process): Periodically inspect the floor markings to identify any signs of wear, damage, or lifting. Pay close attention to high traffic areas and areas prone to spills or heavy use.

  2. Prompt repairs: If you notice any damaged or lifting floor markings, address them promptly. Repair or replace the affected markings to maintain clear and consistent visual cues.

  3. Cleaning: Clean the floor markings regularly using a mild detergent and water solution. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or chemicals that can damage the markings. Gently scrub the surface with a soft brush or mop, and rinse thoroughly to remove any residue.

  4. Avoid harsh treatments: Avoid using heavy machinery or equipment that may scrape or damage the floor markings. Be cautious when moving heavy objects like pallets or using cleaning equipment near the markings to prevent accidental damage. Avoid turnings of forklift trucks directly on floor markings!

  5. Retouching and replacement: Over time, certain areas of the floor markings may fade or wear out due to heavy use. Retouch these areas using appropriate self-adhesive floor marking materials to maintain clear visibility. If necessary, replace worn-out markings entirely for consistent and effective floor marking system.

  6. Regular cleaning schedule: Implement a regular cleaning schedule to ensure the floor markings remain clean and vibrant. Consider factors such as foot traffic, spill frequency, and environmental conditions when determining the cleaning frequency.

  7. Training and awareness: Educate employees or personnel about the importance of preserving the floor markings and encourage their cooperation in maintaining a clean and safe working environment. Promote awareness of the significance of floor markings for navigation, safety, and efficiency. Also train your employees what the different colours mean.

By following these step-by-step instructions, you can achieve a successful installation of self-adhesive floor markings. Proper preparation and application techniques will help ensure a long-lasting and effective floor marking solution.
